Nike has paid James more than $300 million during his career (he’s earned $234 million in Nike Air Max 270 Womens playing salary), but it has been money well spent for the $35 billion-in-revenue sports giant. Nike’s market share of the $1 billion performance basketball market was 73.5% in 2017, according to NPD. The Nike-owned Nike Roshe Run Womens Jordan Brand added another 7.8% share.While James has the top-selling signature shoe, his sales, along with the entire category, are off substantially. “Basketball has fallen from its height of being an important streetwear product to really out of fashion right now,” says NPD Group analyst Matt Powell.The performance basketball market, where shoes typically retail for at least $120, peaked at $1.3 billion in 2015 but fell 13.6% last year, says Nike Roshe Run Mujer Powell. It is not just basketball struggling to move product, either. Performance Nike Roshe Run Femme categories are down across the board, without a single sport trending positively over the last  three years. Powell says it is the first time in 40-plus years that every performance category has declined for multiple years.

Tennis, running and basketball all had runs as "in-fashion" sneakers, but the current trend favors athleisure, with sales of sports leisure styles up 17% last year in the U.S. to $9.6  billion, per NPD. “We are very much in the sports lifestyle phase of the business right now,” says Powell.“Irving moving out from under the shadow of LeBron has raised his personal star,” says Powell. “He’s also still new enough with the signature shoe that fans are coming out and buying.”While the performance basketball market is off, the retro business  continues to hold its own. Sales were flat last year thanks largely to the Jordan Adidas ZX 750 Womens Brand, which launched in 1984 on the back of basketball legend Michael Jordan, who hung up Adidas ZX Flux Womens his high tops for good in 2003. Retro is more than three times the size of performance basketball with sales at $3 billion last year. Jordan had a 65% share of retro basketball in 2017, according to NPD  Group, followed by Nike (23%), Adidas (9.3%) and Puma (2.3%). Nike also has a substantial Jordan business in China, which is not measured here.
